Dunera collection. 1940-

A major and nationally significant archive of materials relating to this episode in Australian history. The collection consists of diaries, original works of art and other memorabilia produced by the internees documenting the experience of camp life in Hay and Tatura (e.g. the "Hay Constitution" written on a toilet roll). There are also other documents, photographs, contemporary press reports, and artefacts (items the men managed to bring with them as well as objects they made while interned).

On 6 Sept. 1940 a group of internees, the majority Jewish, arrived in Australia on board the ship Dunera. They had been transported from England at the height of Britain's fight for survival against Nazi Germany. These men were interned in Australia as enemy aliens until 1941 when they were released.
